Three Things We Actually Do With AI at UWAY (No Demos, No Hype)

A trending thread on Xiaohongshu last week asked: "What have you actually done with AI?"

Most answers were predictable — writing memos, generating slides, creating outfit recommendations.

I thought about our own answer.

UWAY is a compliance company. We help financial institutions, fintechs, and digital asset businesses manage regulatory obligations across Hong Kong, Singapore, and other jurisdictions. It is, by any measure, an unsexy industry.

And we've built three AI-powered capabilities that our clients actually use in production every week.

1. Automated Data Analysis

Compliance generates enormous data volumes. Transaction logs, KYC documents, sanctions list updates, news screening, regulatory filings.

The traditional approach: assign analysts to manually extract, compare, and flag. One person, one week, one report. High error rate, low morale.

Our approach: AI ingests multiple data sources simultaneously, cross-references against watchlists, flags anomalies, and generates structured reports in minutes.

The goal is not to demonstrate how advanced the AI is. The goal is to free analysts from spreadsheet drudgery so they can focus on judgment calls — the part of compliance that actually requires human expertise.

In practice: A client processing 50,000+ transactions per week reduced data collection time from 3 days to 90 minutes. Analyst time shifted from extraction to evaluation.

2. Operational Efficiency Analytics

We built a platform that answers a deceptively simple question: where is your compliance team actually spending its time?

  • How long does one identity verification take?
  • How many approval steps per transaction review?
  • What's the average time from alert to case closure?

AI automatically captures these metrics, visualizes workflow bottlenecks, and surfaces optimization opportunities.

The most common reaction from teams reviewing their own data for the first time: "60% of our time goes to repetitive tasks."

Why this matters: Most compliance teams operate by intuition. They feel overworked but can't quantify where the friction is. Measurement is the prerequisite for improvement. Once you know that 60% of time is consumed by manual data entry and cross-referencing, you can prioritize automation investment accordingly.

3. AI-Powered Document Templates

This is the least glamorous capability and gets the strongest client feedback.

Compliance documentation varies by jurisdiction, product type, and risk profile. KYC reports, risk assessments, SAR/STR filings, due diligence memos — each has different formats, regulatory expectations, and internal standards.

Building these documents from scratch is time-consuming and error-prone. Templates help, but regulatory requirements evolve constantly.

We built a template engine that takes key case parameters and generates a regulatory-compliant first draft. The analyst reviews, edits, and submits.

One client told us: "We went from two reports per person per day to eight. We didn't get more productive — the AI just ate the boring part."

The key design principle: The AI generates the draft, but the analyst owns the output. Every document includes a confidence indicator showing which sections were machine-generated and which were human-authored. This transparency matters for auditability.

The Common Thread

None of these capabilities are flashy. There is no generative AI chatbot pretending to be a compliance officer. No deepfake detection demo. No blockchain-AI-buzzword combination.

Each solves a real operational pain point:

| Pain Point | Solution | Outcome | |---|---|---| | Analysts overwhelmed by data volume | Automated collection and anomaly flagging | 80%+ reduction in data processing time | | Teams blind to their own workflows | Automated metric capture and visualization | Measurable bottleneck identification | | Repetitive documentation consuming analyst time | AI-powered template engine | 4x increase in report output per analyst |

AI in compliance doesn't need to be exciting. It needs to be reliable.

A Framework for Evaluation

If you are building or evaluating AI capabilities in a compliance context, we suggest asking one question:

Does this tool make my team's judgment matter more, or less?

If the answer is more — you are on the right track. The AI handles volume; the human handles nuance. The tool amplifies expertise rather than replacing it.

If the answer is less — you are building a compliance black box. Regulators will eventually ask you to open it, and you will not have a good answer.

This distinction is not philosophical. It has operational consequences:

  • Judgment-amplifying tools produce audit trails (the AI flagged X, the analyst decided Y). Regulators understand this.
  • Judgment-replacing tools produce outputs without reasoning. Regulators distrust this.

Compliance is ultimately about accountability. The human must be able to explain why a decision was made. AI that obscures that accountability creates regulatory risk, regardless of how accurate it is.

What's Next

The three capabilities described here are in production today. They are not pilots or proofs of concept. They handle real client data, subject to real regulatory scrutiny, on a daily basis.

Our roadmap includes extending these capabilities into predictive risk scoring (identifying emerging patterns before they become rule violations) and cross-jurisdictional document compliance (automatically adapting reports to different regulatory formats).

But the principle stays the same: build for reliability, not impressiveness. Compliance is not a showcase industry.
