3,000 Lines of If-Else, No One Dared to Delete — Until AI Showed Up

The rule engine has been the standard architecture for compliance systems for 20 years. Every rule was hand-written if-else. Then AI Agents started eating the middleware layer.

3,000 Lines of If-Else, No One Dared to Delete — Until AI Showed Up

A friend on a compliance team once told me:

"We have 3,000 rules in our system. Every single one was written by a human. Every time regulations change, IT spends two months modifying them."

I asked: Can you keep up?

"We can't. But we can't delete them either — because behind every rule is a regulatory fine we once got."

That's the fate of the rule engine.

20 Years of If-Else

The rule engine's logic is simple: if-else, stacked one on top of another.

Transaction > $10,000? Flag as suspicious. Transaction at 3 AM? Flag as anomalous. Counterparty on sanctions list? Block.

Inside a major bank's compliance system, tens of thousands of if-else rules are running.

No one can explain what all of them do. No one dares to delete them.

Every regulatory update means: IT modifies code, compliance writes requirements, QA tests everything. A single change takes three weeks from start to deployment.

Then AI Agents Arrived

Not to replace compliance analysts. To eat the middleware layer that rule engines occupied.

Traditional approach: New regulation → Compliance interprets → IT writes rules → Deploy → Test → Go live Three months.

AI Agent approach: Regulation text into knowledge base → AI reads and understands → Generates configuration → Human reviews Three days.

No more if-else. Rules aren't "written" anymore — they're read by AI from regulatory text.

The Paradigm Shift: From Deterministic to Probabilistic

Rule engines are deterministic: IF this THEN that, no surprises.

AI Agents are probabilistic: it "thinks" the rule should be configured this way, and gives you a confidence score.

Compliance professionals get nervous when they hear "probabilistic."

"What do you mean 'thinks'? If it's wrong, who's responsible?"

Fair question.

Our approach: AI generates the configuration. Humans make the final call.

The AI says: "According to HKMA guidance, this transaction requires these data fields." The human reviews: "Correct. Confirm."

AI making mistakes isn't the problem. The problem is having no human to catch them.

What We're Actually Doing

We're not replacing compliance teams with AI.

We're using AI to eat the most painful part of their workflow: rule configuration.

So compliance teams don't have to wait for IT to change code. So IT doesn't have to maintain tens of thousands of if-else statements. So every regulatory update can be implemented in days, not months.

Rule engines won't disappear overnight. But they'll transition from "core" to "legacy." Like tape drives — no one uses them anymore, but no one dares to remove them.
